TMH: Our Story So Far

The Music Hub is a growing and vibrant music school based in Wolverhampton. In this first blog, we want to take a little time to share our story in some more detail and also explain why we do what we do.

The Beginning

Nearly 16 years ago, our founder, Alistair Smith, was asked by a pianist he knew, if he knew anyone who could teach drums. The words “I can do it” jumped out quicker than Alistair could think and the story of sharing music with others began.

Over the first couple of years, Alistair had a small number of students and was teaching out of various locations of the All Nations Building, which is still where we are based today. With no marketing, website, training or experience, Alistair began sharing his love of the music, through the drums, with anyone and everyone.

The church took note of this, as some of Alistair’s students began to get involved with the youth worship band. With the support of some of the church’s other musicians, Alistair began teaching in, and eventually running a music school on behalf of the church. This school grew to approximately 30 students on a weekly basis learning to play drums, guitar, piano and violin. During this time running the school for the church, Alistair began to see how much music had the power to impact those who play and study it and began contemplating “one day” running something independently. The seeds of TMH were beginning to grow.

April 2020

Covid hit the UK and all activity was shut down as a result of global pandemic. Lessons in the music school stopped for a short while and a handful of student carried on with lessons online. During this time, the church made the decision to close its music school and focus efforts elsewhere. Alistair was back to running lessons privately, using the church facilities. It was now that opportunity arose for something to change.

June 2021

This was the beginning of The Drum Hub and the beginning of the school we operate today. The Drum Hub was founded and set out to become the number one place to have drum lessons in Wolverhampton, by providing a full and well rounded teaching experience using a balanced and fun curriculum. The goal was to provide its students with the opportunity to learn and experience music that would lead to a lifetime of enjoyment of music. This is one of our key beliefs today.

As The Drum Hub grew, opportunities came to add other instruments to the school, but we noticed that we were having a hard time growing these instruments under the name The Drum Hub. This was the final step for the school and in August 2024 we rebranded the school to The Music Hub. We are working hard to become the number one place to have music lessons in Wolverhampton. A place where people from all walks of life can find an expression of their love for music and a community of like minded people to share it with.

Present Day

In the last 12 months, TMH has grown in so many ways, our students are learning and growing on a weekly basis, the team or expert tutors has increased as has the team who work behind the scenes. We are continung to improve and build upon our 100% pass rate with exams all the way to grade 8. We are also working to expand our impact on the community by releasing some of our curriculum into book format as well launch an exciting new band programme " The Band Lab", as well as other projects. Our goal in all of this is to share the joy of music with as many people as possible.

If this sounds like something you want to be a part of, you can book a free taster lesson with one of the team today!
